Ackeem Salmon

Ackeem Salmon’s art practice explores the cultural identities and complexities of the Black body in a postcolonial reality. His most recent body of work titled “Remembering Yellow,” focuses on his childhood in Jamaica and his adulthood living in America. Salmon combines film, painting, and photography as well as his skills as a self-taught composer, harpist, and violinist in creating immersive experiences and exhibitions—using performance and design to show the struggle, beauty, and hope within the African Diaspora.  

Born in Jamaica, now living in Detroit, Ackeem graduated from the College for Creative Studies. He has exhibited in Detroit, Jamaica, Paris, Cape Town, and New York. Since 2018, he has taught art in both private and public schools. Salmon currently serves as the sustainability design and research specialist at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
