Graphic promoting the 2021 Kresge Artist Fellowship application cycle

For the 13th straight year, Kresge Arts in Detroit is honored to invite metro Detroit artists working in both literary and visual arts disciplines to apply for a 2021 Kresge Artist Fellowship.

In 2021, Kresge Arts in Detroit will award 20 fellowships: ten in Literary Arts and ten in Visual Arts to artists of all career stages living and working in Detroit’s tri-county area (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties). Kresge Artist Fellowships are $25,000 no strings attached awards, plus professional development support and the creation of a short film highlighting the artist’s work.

Additionally, ten Gilda Awards—$5,000 no strings attached prizes—will be awarded to emerging artists also living and working in metro Detroit. Gilda awards celebrate the artistic legacy of Gilda Snowden (1954–2014), who was one of the 18 inaugural artists to receive a Kresge Artist Fellowship in 2009, and who taught painting at the College for Creative Studies for more than 30 years.

Photographer and 2019 Kresge Artists Fellow Cybelle Codish urges artists to view the application process as a creative challenge. “When you’re an artist it’s sometimes really, really challenging to think in the linear format of application,’’ she said. “But there’s so many other opportunities that open up to you as a result of going through the process whether it’s just you feeling more confident in yourself. It really does inspire you to push forward.’’
