Steffanie Christi’an
Steffanie Christi’an is a singer, songwriter, performer, and music theatre artist who has been inspired by the sounds and spirit of Detroit since her birth. As a musician and Detroit native, she considers it her duty to uphold and promote its cultural and creative legacy through the lens (and voice) of a Black woman. Christi’an believes women who look like her deserve representation in the art they experience. She has independently released four EPs and one full-length album and has collaborated with countless renowned artists including: Golden Globe winner Idris Elba, Pulitzer Prize nominee Taylor Mac, and the late, great Amp Fiddler. Christi’an’s versatility as a performer is borne of her range in experiences as a touring musician and a broad range of influences, from Leotyne Price to Tina Turner.
Delivering virtuosic artistry, she commands stages and captivates audiences globally as the lead vocalist of the seminal house music group Inner City, the punk-rock poetry duo We Are Scorpio (with jessica Care moore), and the prolific Don Was’ newly formed band, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. As a practitioner and initiated priest of an African Traditional Religion, ancestral veneration is an integral part of both her daily life and artistic practice. Christi’an considers what she does to be work of a healing kind.
